REVIEW: e.l.f. Essential nail polishes

I finally got my (fantastically cheap, of course) tripod, so now I can make videos!

I recently bought five of e.l.f.'s Essential nail polishes because they are sooo cheap, and who doesn't love cute new nail polish colors?! So far, I am quite pleased with them. My omg yay very first video is a quick review of these!

Video after the jump! (Don't you hate how I make you click through? So mean!)

Woot! The tripod that I got itself was totally cheap and is awesome. It's the least expensive one they had at any of the brick and mortar shops I looked at, so of course nobody had it in stock and I couldn't get it that day. It's also the lightest, tallest, and most versatile height-wise of any I found, and it has the smallest footprint/base, so it's super easy to move around and fits really nicely in the bathroom where I take pictures and (now) film. And the online shop I ended up buying it from had the cheapest price+shipping on the whole internet, obviously. But yall don't care about my tripod, do you?

I'd never tried any of e.l.f.'s nail polishes, and I adore their other products and their prices so much that I thought it was time to take the plunge. I'm really glad I did!

I got the Essential 3-Piece Nail Polish Set in Vacation Trio for 3$, making each of the polishes A DOLLAR! There are 6 3-piece sets available for this price, a couple of which include metallic or glittery colors. The bottles are pretty small, but they're the perfect size for dropping into your purse or packing for a trip.

The Liquid Metal (silver) and the Copper are from the larger Essential Nail Polish collection, which come in bigger bottles than the trio and sell for 2$ each. The full collection is 36 different colors, including several other metallics and glitters. I've only tried these two metallic ones, so I can't really comment on the rest of the collection, but if these and the trio are any indication, I bet they're all great.

Well, I guess I can't keep up this stalling much longer, can I? Oh gosh I'm so nervous. Oh well, here goes! Without further ado, here's the review!

I really can't say enough about how nice and thick these are. I've never had a nail polish that I was satisfied with after just one coat, but with these, I feel like a second coat would be downright wasteful. In the video, I wasn't nearly as meticulous as I normally am when applying nail polish, and I'm honestly happy enough with my nails exactly as you saw them to wear them out!

The bottles in the trio (and I suspect any of their sets) and noticeably smaller than most other nail polishes - 0.2 fl oz each compared to the 0.5 fl oz I'm used to seeing - but considering how cheap they are and that you really don't need a second coat, I call that a bargain! Note, though, that the Essential collection (at least the ones that I got) are only .34 fl oz, so that's probably not the best deal around!

OH MAN, how could I forget? The 3-piece set is part of e.l.f.'s Summer Essentials sale, so it was 50% off! Basically I paid $1.50 for 3 super cute nail polishes. Jelly? Don't be! You can have them too! I'll probably get some of the other color sets while this sale is going on, and I'll grab some of the other styles (the Glam Bam and Mysterious sets have glittery ones in them) and let you know how those hold up.

By the way, the rest of this summer sale is pretty sweet. Check out this awesome 144 color eyeshadow palette for a CRAZY 15$! Their Studio Glossy Gloss is really nice, and I'll be picking up a couple of the All Over Cover Sticks (for 50 cents!) in lighter and darker tones than my skin to try my hand at contouring.

INSECURITY DISCLAIMER!
Let me just say... This is my very first video, so I'm pretty sure it sucks. I promise I'll get better at this! First things first, I need to find better and more natural lighting, and I need to get used to looking through the viewfinder to see what you see! But, hey, it's not too, bad, not for my first try! Right?

Don't make fun of my nasty dry hands! I've been chopping up a tree that fell on our house, so my hands are super work-hardened. Ugh, I didn't realize how bad they were until I watched the video. But shut up, I got to use a chainsaw so it's bad ass. And don't freak out about the whole tree thing! Two scratched shingles were the ONLY damage - it's a miracle! - we just had a huge damn tree blocking the whole driveway for about a week and a veritable crapton of sawing to do to get back into the garage. (I have a bunch of pictures. Should I post them?)

But if you have any recommendations for (cheap!) solutions to my yucky dry hands, please leave me a comment!!

  1. Okay, so maybe it sounds gross, but there's a product called "Bag Balm" that comes in a huge can that will last forever and ever for like $5. You use a VERY tiny bit (it's sort of like Vaseline-ish feeling, only thicker) and put it on your hands at night, while reading, or whenever, and it really will make your hands look incredible. For extra treatment (for things like wind burn or WOOD CHOPPING WORK-HARDENED HANDS), slather the crap out of it and put on a pair of cotton gloves with the fingers cut off.

(Yes, the name is exactly what it sounds like. It's actually a product for cows for their udder skin. But hey, it f'ing works well.)
